Lot 282 , A Meissen porcelain necessaire casket, late 19th century, 20cm.
A Meissen porcelain necessaire casket, late 19th century, the exterior painted with Watteauesque scenes of courting couples in landscapes, the interior finely fitted, possibly in London, with gilt metal and coral cabochon sewing accessories, including a rule with English and French scales, together with a Samson Morden silver gilt propelling pencil, mounted ensuite, underglaze blue crossed swords marks and incised model no.11, 20cm.
Estimate £1,000-1,500
The porcelain casket has some minor wear to the gilding in places, there is a very fine curving crack to the front right edge of the base of the casket measuring 2cm across, the interior of the cover has a watered silk cushion which when removed reveals a scene of cherubs in a garden painted in puce, not mentioned in the catalogue description. The later fitted velvet tray has silk ribbons to each side to lift it out from the box but these have rotted and are not substantial enough to do this any longer, the drum shaped tape measure has a detached gilt metal end piece to the silk tape which has broken off, there are 4 replacement cabochons which are a dark brown colour and probably not coral, one of the handles on the scissors is loose and some minor casting imperfections on the drum shaped waxer, some discolouration and wear to the velvet tray, otherwise generally good condition.
