A rare Chinese ivory 'five bats' snuff bottle, 1800-1900, carved in high relief to each side with five bats amid scrolling clouds, 5.4cm, Richards no. 421, matched stopper

There is a fine crack to the foot rim otherwise in good condition with a worn patination to the ivory consistent with age, the stopper has been later matched. The crack is just 2mm.

The 1mm wide black marks to the centre of the snuff bottle are the natural core of the ivory tust from which the bottle was made, one side reveals a minute pinprick of light when a bright torch is shone inside.
