Lot 799 , A Victorian mahogany pedestal partners desk, 5ft x 2ft 9in.
A Victorian Holland & Sons mahogany pedestal partner's desk, with gilt tooled green leather writing skiver above an arrangement of drawers and cupboards, on plinth base, 5ft x 2ft 9in.
Estimate £800-1,200
This desk comes for sale from historical offices in London where it received 'institutional' neglect and repair.
The colour is good. The skiver has been replaced approx. 20 years ago and is now scuffed.
The top does not marry perfectly with the base, at some point it has been removed and then 'bodged' back on.
The top has minor dents and one short split to the edges and one section of moulding missing from the underside of one end.
There are no central doors. Instead an arched scroll units the two pedestals, both sides are missing the tip of one end.
Drawer side - locks replaced, handles replaced through plugged holes where knobs have formerly been fitted. Second and third drawer fronts on the right side have splits running almost the entire width, approx one inch up from the bottom.
Cupboard side - right side door has a differing colour to the top frame. Pin hinges have been replaced/altered. Replacement latches have been fitted with patching to the timbers of the carcase where locks have been forced in the past. Left door currently not fitting properly.
Plinth feet with typical dents and scratches.
Overall this needs a fair amount of restoration but should restore to good effect.
Top 32.5 x 60 inches, height 29in.
