Lot 1140 , 19th century English School Portrait of an 18th century gentleman, 16.5 x 13.5in.
19th century English School
oil on wooden panel,
Portrait of an 18th century gentleman,
oval,
16.5 x 13.5in.
Estimate £200-300
Oil on an old oak panel, paint very smooth and flat with no sign of any craquelure, hence our attribution to this being a 19th century copy of an 18th century work, looking at it a fresh it is possible it is even a 20th century painting, the painting is old enough however to have a dirty surface with some slight scratching just going into the paint in the margin at 9 o'clock, in an old parcel gilt wood frame which is splitting at the corners and rather tatty, a label remnant verso which has been taped over, the base of which says King of Scotland and England and then Aetat XX ... presumably suggesting this is a portrait of James I.
