Henry Redmore (1820-1887)
pair of oils on canvas,
Shipping leaving harbour and On a calm sea,
signed,
12 x 19.5in. (a.f.)
Estimate £300-500
Calm sea - original canvas which remains tight but is very dirty and drying out with a large amount of paint flaking away from the bottom margin and also up towards the right side, further cracking running into the main body of the picture, signature is reduced to H.Re with a hint of a date remaining however this is very flaky, probably one line of retouching along a stretched mark down the left hand side otherwise looks to be the original paint.
Other image in better condition, very slight sag tot he canvas, a fine craquelure running through much of the paint but it still remains attached to the canvas, there has been no losses, very dirty with some blooming in the varnish throughout the work, signs of some retouching through the rigging, sails and sky to the left of the left hand ship, signature still present along with date in lower left corner.
Both in probably overpainted original wooden mounts and beaded gilt frames which are equally grubby.
Both works will require extensive restoration.
