A fine George IV sentimental/mourning jewel, circa 1826, of circular outline, centring on a glazed panel of hairwork with the initials SRD in cut gold, surrounded by the inscription 'The children of James and Sarah Rebecca Domville married 3rd April 1806', within an openwork border of cut gold and locks of hair, the outer edge engraved with the names of the Domville children, backed in opaline glass, mounted in gold carved with foliate motifs, the reverse with engine turned decoration, centring on the inscription 'Obt 23 Dec 1826', to a similarly carved suspension hoop and pendant bail, length 7.6cm including bail
Sarah Rebecca Domville née Smith (1786-1826), was the daughter of London auctioneer William Smith (d.1799). She married James Bell Domville (1778-1846) in 1806, who served as Inspector General of Hospitals, Greenwich, after a career as a naval surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars. Several of their children, commemorated by their locks of hair in this extraordinary jewel, would follow their father's footsteps and embark on naval careers in their adult lives. Sarah Rebecca is buried in Hawksmoor's Church of St Alfege, Greenwich.
