Robbie Ross (1869-1918), ALS to ‘Carlos’, 7 October 1917, 4 pp. Robbie Ross is best known for his relationship with and championing of Oscar Wilde, though he also nurtured many literary & artistic figures of the late nineteenth & early twentieth century, including Siegfried Sassoon. The letter mainly discussed air-raids on London, with much detail & some amusing incidents, such as when “a large dual-shell came through the roof of 39 next door...& alighted on the bed of a fair lady whose husband is at the front. Indeed she would have been killed except that she was committing adultery that evening”. Ross also shares details of a direct hit on the Royal Academy, regarding which “great secrecy...is preserved, for some reason or other”. Condition - good, however there is a neat hole punched in the top left corner of both leaves
