These tables are designed in the late 18th century 'Antique Roman fashions' populised by Robert and James Adam, Works in Architecture 1773'.
The painted decoration of the present lot with its stylised anthemion and amphora recall a design by Robert Adam of the commode supplied to the Countess of Derby. The taste for painted furniture and decoration was also championed by the architect James Wyatt 1746-1813, a contemporary and rival of Robert Adam whose major neo-classical houses include Heveningham Hall in Suffolk, Packington Hall in Staffordshire and Dodington Park in Gloucestershire.
One table has shrinkage split across top, minor veneer loss from the crossbanded border, painted base with minor wear.
Other table in similar condition, with minor losses, left rear leg is loose.
Both have minor stains, scratches and marks and wear to the painted areas, overall both are generally reasonable condition but very decorative.
