Beeton / Coasting on the China and Japan Coasts / and from Amoy to New York... the log in 91 closely written folio pages, in contemp. leather backed marbled boards, 1869-71. *the British wooden barque of 429 tons, built at Milford 1867, and part of the J.J. Holdsworth (London) merchant fleet. Her long Far Eastern trading voyage took in parts including Singapore, Hong Kong, Foochow, Nagasaki and Yokohama; departing from Amoy in August 1870 - where doubtless the tea (8 days loading) brooked large in the manifest - on the long Pacific to New York (arrived Jan. 1871). The weather, ship's position and course recorded throughout; crew's various employments, including changes of sail as dictated by wind and weather; notes on the other vessels met with, including their destinations. The Journal possibly an exercise undertaken by a Merchant Navy cadet or Junior officer?
