each of baluster form, painted two shaped reserves with flowers, birds, peonies and grape vines, the reverse with a duck on a pond, on a dotted yellow ground decorated with flower sprays, with turquoise and pink ground diaper pattern borders, the domed covers with chrysanthemum decorated finials, underglaze blue double circle to base, 42cm high, covers repaired

Provenance: A. E. Bateman; thence by family descent.
Bateman was the representative for the prominent British merchant firm Dodwell & Co. in Kyobashi in the 1920s. The firm operated in Shanghai and Yokohama from the late 19th to mid 20th century, acting as a major import/export and shipping agent.
