A Japanese Arita porcelain dish, 18th century, painted in Imari palette with a central flower vase within a border of birds and foliage, the base with stilt marks, 34.2cm diameter, Chinese carved hongmu stand, wear to gilding
Provenance - A. E. Bateman; thence by family descent.
Bateman was the representative for the prominent British merchant firm Dodwell & Co. in Kyobashi in the 1920s. The firm operated in Shanghai and Yokohama from the late 19th to mid 20th century, acting as a major import/export and shipping agent.

Condition:
There is where to the gilding all over, some occasional wear to the glaze in patches, otherwise in good condition with no restoration, chips or cracks detected. The Chinese stand has been re-glued at the joint of the back support but is otherwise intact.
