A 19th century, circa 1850-1880 hand embroidered Suzani wall hanging, probably from Uzbekistan. Worked on had woven linen, predominantly embroidered in orange, ochre, maroon and green silks in fine chain stitch with an outer border of large sun/moon, floral and leaf motifs and a central vining panel of similar leaves and flower heads. The hanging made in four separate panels joined together. Backed with a fine printed floral spot motif cotton. These embroideries were usually part of a larger dowry.
182cm long x 126cm wide. Condition -there are dark brown marks on the linen in places, as expected with age and use and various areas of wear with missing linen, plus two areas on the border embroidery that are badly torn and the backing floral printed cotton damaged, both needing conservation repair.
