Richard Avedon (American, 1923-2004), a Cartier 18ct. gold tank manual wind wrist watch, with Roman dial and cabochon sapphire set winding crown, case diameter 23mm, the case back inscribed 'To Peter on graduation day, with love Dick, December 22 1971', on a Cartier leather strap with an 18ct gold buckle, no box.

This watch is referred to in "Avedon Something Personal" page 327, where it is stated 'when our English studio manager, Peter Waldman, was leaving to go out on his own, Dick served expensive champagne, and later followed Peter out of the door, took off his Cartier watch, and threw it to him, and Peter caught it midair on the street.'

Condition:
Provenance; from the Collection of Peter Waldman, former studio assistant to Richard Avedon. Minor damage to the dial in places and some discolouration. The glass is scratched. Engraved inscription to the case back. Minor nicks and surface scratches to the case back and sides. Watch ticks when wound and the hands adjust. When the crown is set back against the case, the hands still turn instead of winding, so in need of attention.
