Maibritt Ulvedal Bjelke is an abstract painter whose recent explorations of colour theory suggest a joyful pixelation of the image surface that is also a shimmering meditation on the digitisation of the visual world.

Bjelke was born in Copenhagen and studied painting at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1989-93). She has held residencies at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut (2007), and the Mark Rothko Art Centre, Latvia (2009), where she returned for her first solo museum show in 2019, Chromatic Matters. In 2021, she presented Phantasia, her third solo show at Galerie Pugliese Levi in Berlin. She lives and works in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex.

Bjelke’s work has been exhibited widely in France, Denmark, Switzerland and the USA. She is represented in many international collections in Europe, North America and Asia, including the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, USA; Cerrutti, Milan; Giorgio Armani, France; and the Mark Rothko Art Centre, Latvia; General Motors, USA; Copenhagen Art Foundation
