Lot 306 , Sir William Beechey (1753-1839) Portrait of Captain Mackinley 25 x 19.5in.
Sir William Beechey (1753-1839)
oil on canvas
Portrait of Captain Mackinley
25 x 19.5in.
Estimate £2,000-3,000
Oil on canvas relined many years ago, canvas remains tight, paint looks to be in good order, a fine but stable craquelure running throughout much of the work although particularly evident in the skin tones or white of the stock, more noticeable at the bottom of the work, perhaps a hint of bitumous bubbling showing above the sitters head, overall the background is rather dark and would benefit from a clean, housed in an ornate gilt gesso frame which is dusty, with the gilding drying out and surface craquelure but otherwise in good order, old paper label verso which has now faded down along with an inscription saying painted by William Beechey.
