A fine Rockingham porcelain pot pourri vase and cover, c.1830-42, finely painted with a titled view 'Alnwick Castle, The Seat of the Rt. Honble. Hugh Percy FSA, Duke of Northumberland', the reverse with roses, thistles and shamrocks emblematic of the Union, with gilt leaf moulded borders and pedestal foot, encrusted with white flowers, iron red title otherwise unmarked, H. 35cm

As well as being an avid collector of Rockingham ornamental porcelain and animal figures, Dr. Dennis G. Rice was an academic and wrote two key reference works on the subject – Rockingham Ornamental Porcelain (1965) and the Illustrated Guide to Rockingham Pottery & Porcelain (1971).
A number of the pieces illustrated in the books are offered below. The Rockingham animals figures in the collection are also published in Dennis G. Rice's companion books Dogs & Cats in English Porcelain and English Porcelain Animals of the 19th Century.


The cover has some small losses to the flower finial and a few of the tips have caught in the kiln and browned slightly, the underside and the centre of the cover have two fine hairline cracks, the vase itself has some staining and crazing visible on the interior including a hairline crack which is not visible on the exterior, there are some losses to the encrusted flowers around the reserves and some browning to some of the flowers where they have caught in the kiln possibly some staining, otherwise in good condition.
