This is the only documented piece of factory marked Rockingham porcelain signed by William Willis Bailey. According to A & A Cox, Rockingham 1745-1842, Bailey was one of the most notable artists employed at the Rockingham Works. In 1832, in an account in the Yorkshire Gazette of the dessert service being prepared for William IV, Bailey is listed as one of the artists employed on the service. Several of the plaques by the more notable artists were on display in the China Showroom at the Rockingham Pottery, as they were listed among the items confiscated from the Bramelds and sent to Wentworth House at the closure of the Works.
Provenance:
The Dennis G. Rice collection of fine Rockingham porcelain
As well as being an avid collector of Rockingham ornamental porcelain and animal figures, Dr. Dennis G. Rice was an academic and wrote two key reference works on the subject – Rockingham Ornamental Porcelain (1965) and the Illustrated Guide to Rockingham Pottery & Porcelain (1971).
A number of the pieces illustrated in the books are offered below. The Rockingham animals figures in the collection are also published in Dennis G. Rice's companion books Dogs & Cats in English Porcelain and English Porcelain Animals of the 19th Century.
The plaque has fine crazing to the glaze all over and some pale brown staining to the back. There are seven stained hairline cracks to the edge and some black speckling to the glaze on the right edge. No restoration detected.
