Estimate £400-600
Cf. D. G. RIce, The Illustrated Guide to Rockingham Pottery and Porcelain, plate 55 which is in Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham.
Provenance:
The Dennis G. Rice collection of fine Rockingham porcelain
As well as being an avid collector of Rockingham ornamental porcelain and animal figures, Dr. Dennis G. Rice was an academic and wrote two key reference works on the subject – Rockingham Ornamental Porcelain (1965) and the Illustrated Guide to Rockingham Pottery & Porcelain (1971).
A number of the pieces illustrated in the books are offered below. The Rockingham animals figures in the collection are also published in Dennis G. Rice's companion books Dogs & Cats in English Porcelain and English Porcelain Animals of the 19th Century.
The plate has been broken into several sections with rivet repairs to the underside. There is a rust coloured residue to the back of the plate also. From the front there are tiny splinter losses along the join of the repair and some filler upper right at the one o'clock position. The gilding to the border is a little dull and grubby.
