Lot 296 , A 19th century French ormolu mounted Sienna marble mantel clock, height 17.75in.

A 19th century French ormolu mounted Sienna marble mantel clock, height 17.75in.

A 19th century French ormolu mounted Sienna marble mantel clock, surmounted by a figure group of the Seduction of Aegina over the double plinth base with applied mounts, raised on five toupie feet, the 3.5 inch gilt brass and enamelled dial with Roman chapter ring and blued steel hands, the two train drum movement with brocot type suspension and rack strike on a bell, height 17.75in.
Estimate £400-600

The ormolu may have been regilded in the past and has since softened, and partially discoloured especially to the leg of the figure and the urn to her left side, the drum section of the marble case is cracked and has signs of old repairs, the dial is in good condition apart from a hairline crack between I and II, the hour hand maybe a replacement and would benefit from reglueing, the movement retains some polish but is dirty with old oil in the pivots, the movement is fully wound, the going train is difficult to tell if functioning or not because the pendulum is failing to move on its own, the strike train is functioning but is slow and laboured, most issues we suspect could be dealt with by an overhaul, lacks pendulum.
