Provenance: William Moule and his family, who were Christian missionaries in Ningpo (Ningbo) and Shanghai in the late 19th and early 20th century; thence by descent.

The paper leaf of the fan has become very dry and is torn and split in many places with considerable losses, the kesi case stitching has come undone completely on one side and has been restitched at the bottom, the inner lining consists of paper and a beige coloured silk and there has been some slight moth damage to the interior of this and on the very upper edge of the case and possibly some slight re-stitching in areas.
