This is a marriage with the upper section being of significantly greater quality and also older, the cornice has a number vertical splits running through it where it was made up in sections, drawers are pine backed and have the original brass handles and escutcheons, those to the base are later copies, some of the veneer around the drawers has flaked away and been replaced, one apparently missing section is loose in the drawer, further separation at the sides where the drawers are divided, no doubt due to movement within the carcass, the base section has oak lined drawers and some small patches to the veneers, some scuffing around the base and feet and vertical splits running through the sides, the top of this piece almost certainly started life on a stand and has since been married to a chest base.
