Lot 405 , A late 18th century silver masonic related snuff box, 60 grams.

A late 18th century silver masonic related snuff box, 60 grams.

A late 18th century silver masonic related snuff box, of ovoid form, the hinged lid engraved with the shield and motto of The Worshipful Company Of Masons of London, the top section engraved with the name "Alexr Tait Creiff", unmarked, approx. 3in, 60 grams.
Estimate £300-500

Engraved with the shield and motto of the Worshipful Company of Masons of London. Granted in 1472 the company's original letters patent were alienated from their archives, being reunited only in 1871. This evidently accounts for the engraving's slight deviation from the original pattern and is found in 17th, 18th and 19th usage. The engraving's motto IN THE LORD IS ALL OUR TRUST, a quotation from the Book of Job, xiii, 15, is one of ancient usage.
