An early 18th century silver circular box and cover, the base with latin inscription surrounding a central heraldic pheon, recording the gift of Philip Sydney, Earl of Leicester, January, 1702, the lid engraved with ornate crest, unmarked, 2.75in, 2 oz.

The Hon. Philip Sidney, born in 1676, was son of Robert Sidney, 4th Earl of Leicester, and was accorded the courtesy title Lord Lisle during his father's lifetime. He married Anne Reeve in 1700. The 4th earl lived until 11th November, 1702, on which date his son, Philip, became 5th Earl of Leicester. On Philip's death without issue in 1705 the earldom and subsidiary titles became extinct.
