Lot 1294 , Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner (1808-1894) Entrance to the Souk, Cairo, 26.5 x 40in.
Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner (1808-1894)
watercolour,
Entrance to the Souk, Cairo,
signed and dated 1872,
26.5 x 40in.
Estimate £2,000-3,000
Werner studied at Leipzig Academy and in Munich, travelling to the Middle East from 1862-4 and again in 1875. He exhibited in London from 1860 to 1878, once at Royal Academy and at the New Watercolour Society, of which he became a member.
Watercolour on paper in good untouched condition, no doubt some degree of fading but still retains some good strength of colours, one slight undulation in the paper 2 inches up from the bottom left corner, perhaps the slightest sign of slipping or rubbing in the frame showing down the right hand margin, particularly at the bottom, one pale bleached spot in the top right corner, signed and dated lower right, a few small fox marks scattered through the work but most signs of dirt specking are on the glass rather than the work itself, housed in its original finely moulded gilt gesso frame which now suffers from extensive cracking, original wooden panelling to the back of the work.
Size given is without the frame.
