Oil on original canvas which remains fairly tight, one small patch applied to the dead centre of the work which would be in line with his nose but no sign of any overpainting, a fine but stable craquelure running through the paint which would benefit from a light clean, signed lower left, housed in a more recent velvet lined gilt frame.
