§ Paul Nash (1889-1946)
oil on canvas,
'The Chilterns 1923', British Council Fine Arts Department Exhibition label for Paul Nash Works for Canada 1949/50,
22 x 30in.
Estimate £25,000-30,000
The following two lots were purchased directly from the artist or given as gifts. Paul Nash often stayed at the home of Hilda Felce, a Tudor farmhouse called Whitecliff overlooking Swanage Bay, by direct descent from the family.
Oil on original canvas in good untouched condition, some slight undulation showing in the canvas and the paint is rather dirty so would benefit from a good clean, not signed. In an old probably original moulded gilt frame which is similarly dirty with a few small surface chips. A Smart Water Tracer sticker has been glued to the back of the canvas giving the appearance of a patch, however this is purely where the label is attached rather than restoration to the work, running vertically up to the left of that sticker is a feint inscription on the back that looks like Benn Bass, various inscriptions on the stretcher relating to the artists name and framing. A Perrin Williams label remnant along with the British Council Fine Arts Department Exhibition label of Paul Nash Works for Canada 1949/50 giving the title 'The Chilterns 1923' and the owner Miss Winifred Felce, Wilcott, Near Marlborough,Wiltshire.
Overall a good honest work that has not seen any damage or restoration and will clean to good effect.
